Airbnb tapped to help lure visitors for PyeongChang Winter Olympics
Airbnb Inc has signed an agreement with the organising committee of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics to handle private accommodation options for an expected influx of travellers visiting PyeongChang for the Games.
Airbnb said it will work with the local community to secure sufficient lodging options for visitors, which follows a similar agreement struck with Gangwon Province, where PyeongChang is located, to provide accommodation and promotional activities for the event.
The number of local Airbnb hosts has steadily risen as the Olympic Games approach.
Airbnb says the number has grown by about 30% since December 2016.
"With the eyes of the world focused on PyeongChang, our community is stepping up and providing guests with unique and local travel experiences," said Chris Lehane, Airbnb head of global policy and public affairs.
Airbnb played a similar role during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
It housed about 85,000 travellers during the Games, or 17% of the city’s 500,000 total visitors.
