Algeria makes tourism bid
Algerian tourism officials have enlisted the help of The Guild of Travel and Tourism to promote the country as a tourist destination.
The guild is planning a fam trip to Algeria later this year to showcase the country’s highlights and to persuade UK tour operators that it’s safe for tourists.
The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all but essential travel to certain parts of the country due to a high threat of terrorism.
The guild’s chief executive Nigel Bishop explained: "Algeria is not on the UK tourist map at the moment but we hope we can persuade specialist travel companies to add it to their tours."
At present, only one British tour operator, Expert Algeria, runs tours to Algeria.
The guild has identified two main types of holidays in Algeria – cultural tours focusing on the Roman remains along the country’s Mediterranean coast and adventure holidays in the desert in the south.
British Airways flies daily to Algeria from London Gatwick.
