American Airlines ditching no carry-on rule for Basic Economy
American Airlines is ending its policy of no carry-on bags for Basic Economy customers.
Rules will change from September 5.
Then fliers will be able to bring one bag as a carry-on as well as the existing allowance for a small item such as a purse which is small enough to place under the seat.
The change has been prompted by competing airlines’ more friendly policies allowing a carry-on with customers booking the cheap seats.
"We put this product out with a slightly different model. We think the right thing to do is get in line with the competition," said AA CEO Doug Parker.
The policy had confused and irked passengers forced to pay a minimum $25 fee to check in their carry-on sized item.
Although AA had clearly stated the rules tied to Basic Economy fares, it clearly hasn’t worked.
