American Airlines may restart Chicago-China flights
American Airlines may resume China flights again from its Chicago hub just months after suspending the services.
The airline seems unfazed by the simmering US-China trade war and is reviewing its network with the possibility of reinstating flights to Beijing and Shanghai from Chicago O’Hare.
It will review its network strategy and the commercial viability, acknowledging travel demand is still growing.
"Over the past five years, we have firmly established ourselves in the Asia-Pacific region and in the China market. Our Asia-Pacific network, of which China is a big part of, is performing better than it has at any time in our history," said Sam Martin, AA’s general manager of Australia and New Zealand operations.
The carrier operates daily to Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai from Los Angeles and Dallas-Fort Worth.
Its Sino-US strategy is closely tied with its China Southern Airlines partnership which includes a codesharing and loyalty alliance.
"With the opening of Beijing Daxing International Airport in 2019 and the ability to cooperate fully with China Southern , we are excited about our future in the Chinese market," said Maxine Peng, general manager of American Airlines China.
However, American CEO Doug Parker said it has no plans to increase its minority stake in China Southern Airlines.
American currently holds a shareholding of under 3% in Asia’s largest carrier.
