American tourist drowns in Phuket
An American tourist has died after drowning in choppy seas off the Thai island of Phuket.
The body of James Edmond Newman, 45, from New York was washed ashore, while the body of his Thai girlfriend Waranya Chanphai, 48, was recovered from the sea some time later.
Authorities say a red flag was displayed at the beach warning people not to swim.
‘It is believed that one of them was swept away by a wave, and when the other went to help, they too drowned,” said Police Major Ronnapoom Permpoon.
Newman is the second US national to drown in Thailand in the past two weeks.
Earlier this week eight foreign tourists were rescued from rough seas after ignoring red flag warnings.
It included two Indian couples at Karon Beach and four Russians at Pa Tong Beach.
