Another weekly record for guns seized at US airports
Seizures of firearms at US airports are on track for yet another all-time record this year, the Transportation Security Administration said.
The last week of July set a new record of 96 guns found in carry-on bags, up from a previous weekly high of 89 the previous month.
The TSA said on its blog 85 firearms were loaded and 26 had a round in the chamber.
Through June, TSA officers have detected 1,861 guns, which is up about 20% compared to the first six months of 2016.
Last year’s overall total of 3,391 seizures has tripled since 2010.
The TSA also revealed officers found an inert grenade hidden inside a shoe in a checked bag at Milwaukee Airport.
Travelers in possession of firearms at security checkpoints can be arrested and fined up to $11,000.
Registered permit holders may transport unloaded weapons by air but only via checked bags in lockable hard-sided luggage.
