Arrests following gang rape of Swiss tourist

Wednesday, 19 Mar, 2013 0

Five men are believed to have been arrested and confessed to raping a Swiss tourist while on a cycling holiday with her husband.

Two other suspects are being sought,  a senior police officer, DK Arya told the Guardian.

The five men arrested at the weekend are from villages near where the attack occurred while the couple camped in a forest in the Datia district of Madhya Pradesh state.

The woman, 39, was raped by seven or eight men but it was dark and they could not be sure of the exact number, Arya said.

The husband was beaten and tied up by the men. The couple were also robbed of their laptop, phone and money.

The Swiss tourists, who were on a three-month visit, had visited the temple town of Orchha and were planning to cycle the 130 miles to the Taj Mahal in Agra.

The attack happened three months after the fatal gang rape of a 23 year-old woman aboard a Delhi bus, see previous story.
