Volcanic ash cloud, a gloomy recession and purse-tightening austerity measures did not stop Caribbean idyll Aruba from seeing large rises in visitor numbers, according to the destination’s tourism stats.
The island saw a 26% year-on-year lift in visitor numbers in 2010, with the figure rising from 11,512 to 14,539. This builds on 2009 when the numbers went up by 28%.
The Aruba Tourism Authority is looking to capitalise on its growing popularity and has begun a £300,000 advertising campaign which includes posters on London bus sides, Tube advertising and 125 London and Manchester black cabs getting Aruba liveries.
There are now also 30 UK operators featuring the destination.
Aruba Tourism Authority UK director Joanna Walding said: “Despite the recession, ash clouds, the World Cup and economic uncertainty, Aruba had another record year and has remained one of the fastest growing destinations in the Caribbean for British holidaymakers.
"We have now firmly established ourselves as one of the top ten destinations in the Caribbean for the UK market and we are second only to the Netherlands in generating visitors to the island among all our European markets.
