At least 21 dead in Venice tour bus accident.
At least 21 people are dead after a tourist bus plunged off a flyover near Venice.
It crashed and burst into flames, officials said.
The bus went through a barrier and fell about 50 feet.
Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro called it a ‘huge tragedy.’
“An apocalyptic scene, there are no words,” he posted online.
At least three children including an infant died.
It was carrying several foreign nationals with Ukrainians and a German among the deceased.
At least 15 were injured including nationals from Austria and Spain.
A total of 39 people were onboard at the time.
It was travelling from the centre of Venice to a nearby campsite
The bus was reportedly a hybrid vehicle, powered by electric batteries and gas
“The scene we found was terrible. It took about one hour to extract some of the bodies,” said Mauro Luongo, commander of the Venice fire department.
An investigation hopes to determine why the bus went through the barrier.
“The bus was new and electric, and that street wasn’t particularly problematic,” Veneto regional governor, Luca Zaia said.
“This is an important tragedy, but it’s difficult to understand how it happened.”
The driver was among the dead.
