A gunman has opened fire at an open-air music festival at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.

Latest reports say at least 50 people were killed and up to 400 injured when the gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of hotel building.

The suspect, Stephen Paddock, 64, has been killed. Reports say he killed himself as police approached the hotel room, which he had checked into on September 28.

Las Vegas Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said investigators had found more than 10 rifles in the hotel room.

It is the worst mass shooting in recent American history.

Parts of the Las Vegas strip were shut down and flights were suspended and diverted in light of the incident, which took place shortly after 10:00pm local time.

Police had urged people to stay away from the area and also confirmed two off duty officers were among the dead, and the attacker.

The gunman rained bullets down on the crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, which was later put on virtual lockdown until the all-clear was given.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo named 64-year-old Stephen Paddock as the suspected shooter. He is from the Las Vegas area.

Reports say people have been sheltering in hotels, restaurants and at Las Vegas McCarran airport.

The Route 91 country music festival had begun on Friday and was taking place at several hotels on the Las Vegas strip.
