Atlanta loses title as world’s busiest airport
Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport has lost its crown as the world’s busiest airport. According to Airports Council International data, ATL was overtaken by an airport in China.
The airport saw passenger traffic drop 61% in 2020 to just 42.9 million passengers in 2020. China’s Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport came out on top with 43.8 million passengers.
In fact China airports dominated with seven out of the top 10 busiest airports, thanks to its speedier recovery of the domestic air travel market. Still, ACI expects Atlanta to regain its top ranking when the US travel market finally recovers to pre-pandemic levels.
