Australia mulling Mandarin road signs to boost Chinese self-drive holidays

Thursday, 11 Dec, 2015 0
The Australian government is considering a move to translate road signs in Mandarin across the country in an effort to attract more Chinese tourists taking self-drive holidays.

The proposal is being put forward by federal tourism minister Richard Colbeck

"With China being one of our most important markets, we need to make sure we service it properly," Colbeck said, adding that Melbourne’s Chinatown district has already started doing this.

Tourism and Transport Forum chief executive Margie Osmond said helping Chinese tourists get around the country easier in a safer way is an important step forward.

"China represents our largest tourist market now and it’s really important the new breed of Chinese visitor, who likes to get in the car and drive, has got signs in a language they can understand," she said.

However the proposal has not been welcomed by everyone.

GrandCity Travel, Australia’s largest inbound Chinese tour agency says it could mean less travellers use Australian travel agents to plan trips.

"My opinion is, don’t encourage people, the Chinese people, to privately drive," said director Kevin Xu.
