BA combats low cost threat with fare cuts

Sunday, 20 Apr, 2006 0

British Airways is to cut fares to European short haul destinations in an effort to combat the threat of rival low cost carriers.

An overhaul of the airline’s fare structure will see rates as much as halved to destinations such as Berlin, Paris and Barcelona in an attempt to draw passengers from the likes of easyJet and Ryanair.

BA will continue to offer ‘frills’ including free food and drink on flights and will not charge for checked in bags.

Prices start at £29 one way and all non-changeable economy tickets will be scrapped with passengers able to move their flights up to midnight the day prior to departure.

The carrier claims to have reduced one-way prices for UK and European flights by 70% compared to a decade ago.

Commercial director Martin George said: “We have slashed our one-way fares by up to 50% and will have over seven million plane seats a year to more than 65 destinations available at these new rates.

“This is not a short-term gimmick, but a long-term commitment to our millions of customers to offer irresistible low fares every day of the year. There are no hidden extras.”
