Backlash from ‘u-turn’ on Heathrow expansion
The Government’s plan to look at all options for airport expansion – including the controversial third runway at Heathrow – has angered politicians.
Reports suggest that David Cameron is considering an independent panel of experts to look at the issue, taking the decision out of MPs’ hands, see previous story.
Previously the coalition has opposed plans to expand Heathrow.
But Mayor of London Boris Johnson said Heathrow expansion would be a ‘disaster’ while Zac Goldsmith warned he would stand down at the next election if his party does not block expanding Britain’s biggest airport.
"I think the arguments that are put forward in favour of Heathrow expansion are based on wild exaggerations," Zac Goldsmith, MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston, told BBC Radio 4’s World at One.
"I personally would not want to stand as a Conservative candidate on a manifesto that is ambiguous on this issue. I think we need to be very very clear and honest with voters."
Prime Minister David Cameron’s official spokesman said that the Government’s position was unchanged but a consultation process will be announced in the new few weeks which will look at all sides.
