Bahamas on track to become largest Caribbean resort destination

Tuesday, 05 Aug, 2008 0

The opening a while back of the 694-room Sheraton Cable Beach Resort is a glimpse of what’s ahead as the largest single destination resort in the Caribbean is built.

When Baha Mar in the Bahamas is completed in a few years, it will have a Caesars Resort Hotel & Casino, as well as hotels from Starwood, St. Regis, W and Westin. In addition it will have an existing Wyndham Nassau Resort. All together, the properties will have 3,000 guest rooms and 200,000 square feet of meeting space.

The Atlantis on Paradise Island is the granddaddy of Caribbean resorts. The property completed a $1 billion expansion last year that included increasing the meeting space to nearly 300,000 square feet.

The facility with 2,000 rooms can host groups of up to 5,000 delegates.

The Bahamas prime location just one hour from Miami and about three hours from New York has helped make it a popular meeting destination.

Various renovations are underway, including the 288-room British Colonial Hilton in downtown Nassau, which is getting a renovation of meeting rooms and lobby. All guest rooms should be renovated by the end of the year, including the hotel’s famous James Bond-inspired “OO” suite.
