Bali bombers win fresh review of cases

DENPASAR – Three death row Bali bombers have won the right for their case to be reviewed, in a move likely to delay their impending executions.

Denpasar District Court head Nyoman Gde Wirya said the Supreme Court had accepted the trio’s request for a judicial review of their cases.

The men played key roles in the twin nightclub bombings in Kuta, Bali, on October 12, 2002, which killed 202 people including 88 Australians.

The families of Australian victims of the blasts say they are disappointed but not surprised by the delay, although one father whose son was killed said he did not support the death penalty before the Bali bombings and to do so now would be “vindictive”.

Other families indicated that the Indonesian government was reluctant to execute the trio for fear that their deaths would provoke a further outbreak of bombings in Bali.

A spokesman for Indonesia’s Attorney General told AAP,”We have to wait for the Supreme Court decision, like it or not.”

Denpasar District Court has appointed three judges to handle each of the three cases, he told reporters in Bali.

“The Supreme Court has ordered Denpasar District Court to form a panel of judges for the cases of judicial review submitted by lawyers of the death convicted in the Bali bombing terrorism case,” the spokesman said.

“The head of Denpasar District Court will leave it to the judges in each case (to decide) when it will be held.”
