Bali is embarking on a new strategy to attract sports tourists to the island.

The Indonesian Tourism Businesses Association and the Bali Tourism Promotion Board will work with the Bali branch of the National Sports Committee to organise various events, aimed at attracting more visitors to Bali.

The first event to be held under the Bali Sports Tourism programme is Bali Sports Week 2013, scheduled for November 1 -17, involving nine separate sporting events, including swimming, marathon and badminton, plus one recreational event.

More than 1,000 athletes are expected to participate.

The recreational event will be a cycle race around Bali.

The swimming competition will be held in open water, with two distance categories: five and 10km.

The marathon is intended to be the closing event on November 17.
