Bangkok sets course for airport confusion

The window cleaners are back at Bangkok’s Don Muang airport, sprucing up the much maligned facility in preparation for its re-opening to international flights next month.

The Thai transport ministry has yet to decide which airlines should move back to Don Muang to allow airport authorities to fix problems associated with the new Suvarnabhumi airport.

The most likely outcome is that Thai Airways International will stay at the new airport, several budget operators will switch back to the old airport and the rest can hold a raffle to see whether they stay or go.

The Thai Airline Operators Committee opposes the government’s decision to reopen Don Muang airport for international flights, saying having two international airports could cause confusion among travellers.

Don Muang serviced almost 39 million passengers a year before the capital’s airport was moved to Suvarnabhumi on Sept 28 last year.

In addition to causing confusion, AOC said there is no public transport linking the two airports, which are almost 50 kilometres apart at opposite ends of Bangkok.
