Barbados insists beach water quality safe

Barbados Tourism Marketing is insisting that the water quality on its beaches remains safe, despite an overflow of sewage on the island’s south coast.

In an update to tour operators, it said that there had been ‘much improvement’ in the affected area since last week due to a series of emergency measures taken by the Barbados Water Authority.

It has put a stop to water flows on the streets, it said, while working towards a final solution to the problem, which has resulted from broken sewage pipes. "This relief has been very well received by businesses and residences in the area who were previously affected," said Barbados Marketing.

"In response to the travel advisories issued by the US, Canada and the UK, the Ministry of Health reassures the public that all potable water has been monitored and there is no cause for alarm; also, the results of their recent investigations concluded that the quality of water on the beaches remains safe," it added.

"For many years Barbados has been revered as an island that provides safe, idyllic and memorable holidays for all. We are therefore anxiously looking forward to seeing this matter fully resolved and continuing our high standard of service and experience for our visitors."
