Beware of Air Asia Connecting Flights
In the wake of Air Asia’s new service from Kuala Lumpur to London, I feel obliged to bring forth a rather unpleasant experience when Air Asia X was promoting its new route between Kuala Lumpur and Gold Coast in Australia more than a year ago.
Upon checking at Bangkok Airport my Air Asia flight to Kuala Lumpur was delayed and the Air Asia staff promised to notify their counterpart at Kuala Lumpur of is own flight delay from Bangkok to ensure that I would be able to connect with the onward flight from KL to Gold Coast. A ‘Special sticker’ was prominently displayed on my chest and I was told in no uncertain terms that I would be met by Air Asia staff when I arrived at KL Airport. All was well and reassuring as I was seated on the front ‘Priority’ row for the flight from Bangkok and upon touch down at KL was once again promised by the crew that all was fine, pointing to the plane bound for Gold Coast which was parked right next door. To cut a long story short there was not a soul from Air Asia waiting and the staff at check-in counter for Gold Coast flight said the flight was closed and would not do anything except trying to sell me a new ticket for the next available flight which was another two days away!
The airline’s airport manager was rude and would only say that he had received neither notification nor request from his Bangkok counterpart. When asked where Air Asia’s office in KL is located it was most outrageous for him to refuse the information citing that it was a company secret!
The financial burden of purchasing new air tickets with another airlines in order to meet business commitment at the destination and what happened thereafter is a side issue, but the main issue here is to warn every traveler who needs to connect with Air Asia’s flights to London at Kuala Lumpur from anywhere, brace yourself for nasty surprises. It would not be worth it even though the Airlines has been boasting over 85% of its flights are on time. You could be on a very rough receiving end.
