Biden administration proposes new rules for airline fee disclosure
The Biden administration wants to impose rules ending hidden airline fees.
It is proposing new rules that would mandate airlines and third-party booking sites to show the full cost of an airfare when comparing options rather than just before the payment page.
“You should know the full cost of your ticket right when you’re comparison shopping to begin with, so you can pick the ticket that actually is the best deal for you,” Biden said at a White House Competition Council meeting.
The rule would require all fees to be listed up front, that customers don;t have to navigate to such as separate links.
It would ‘require airlines to be transparent with customers about the fees they charge, which will help travelers make informed decisions and save money,’ Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said.
Airlines for America claims US carriers are already transparent about all ticket fees.
“A4A member passenger already offer transparency to consumers from first search to touchdown,” the group said.
“US airlines are committed to providing clarity regarding prices, fees and ticket terms.”
