Big public support for casino resorts in Thailand
Thailand’s plan to legalize gambling with integrated casino resorts is widely supported by the public.
During a public consultation requesting feedback and suggestions, about 70,000 people responded.
Of these about 80% were in favour of the draft bill to make casino gambling legal.
The Thai government wants to boost tax revenues and overall tourism through Las Vegas style integrated casino resorts.
Several casino operators have signaled their interest in bidding for a casino license.
These include MGM, Galaxy Entertainment and Las Vegas Sands Corp.
There is still some opposition due to the social problems around gambling and the high cost of entry will shut out local Thai companies.
