Poll of young travellers shows nearly a fifth are drunk every day

Young people are 10 times more likely to binge drink while on holiday than when they are at home, according to research.

A poll of more than 700 18- to 30-year-olds by The Portman Group found that less than two per cent had been “drunk every day or almost as much” during the past week. However, more than 19 per cent said they had been drunk every day on their last holiday.

Jean Coussins, chief executive of The Portman Group, which was set up to promote sensible drinking, said: “No-one would be surprised to learn that young people relax, let their hair down and drink a bit more when on holiday. But our survey shows incredible numbers think it is normal to get drunk, and that they are much more likely to over-indulge when they are away.”

The group has published a guide on how to drink safely in hot weather, advising travellers to “pace themselves, drink plenty of water and apply sun cream if necessary”.
