More than 50 are believed to have died in weekend explosions

Tourism in the Indian city of Bombay is today in a parlous state following the weekend’s explosions, which are now believed to have killed more than 50 people.

The massive blasts, which injured hundreds, took place in the south of the city – one in the famous waterfront area and another in a crowded jewellery market nearby. Islamic fundamentalists from across the border in Pakistan have already been blamed for the bombings by many commentators, even if Pakistan has moved quickly to condemn the bombings “in the strongest possible terms”.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office website, at www.fco.gov.uk/travel, states: “It is not yet known who was responsible for these blasts or what their motives are, but there is no reason to believe that the hotel or foreign nationals were a target. We advise anyone travelling to Mumbai to be especially vigilant in public places until the situation becomes clearer, and that they monitor events through the media.”
