Boston Convention Center undergoing major Wi-Fi upgrade
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center is undergoing a major upgrade of its Wi-Fi system, increasing wireless access points from 113 to at least 580.
The $2.6 million wireless infrastructure overhaul will be the fourth upgrade the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority has undertaken in the last decade.
The MCCA says it will transition from a traditional ‘coverage’ wireless system, which concentrates on signal strength over a wide area, to an advanced ‘high-density’ system.
Work has started on installation of the new system which will be ready for live testing from May 2015, and will then be rolled out in phases.
Next year the Convention Center Authority will also upgrade the wireless system at the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center for launch during 2016.
The work is aligned to a major $1 billion expansion project for the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center announced earlier this year which will add an extra 1.3 million square feet of event space.
