Brexit could ‘hit tourism across EU’
Brexit will have a potential ‘enormous impact on tourism’ across the EU, Ryanair claimed at a round table discussion hosted by the airline and attended by MEPs from Hungary, Italy and Romania in the European Parliament.
It emphasised the need for urgent clarity of air access when the UK leaves the European Union after market analysts Frontier Economics revealed that the UK accounts for 10% to 40% of the total travel within the EU.
Ryanair also announced its support for the new European Capital of Tourism project, designed to boost tourism across the Continent.
Modelled on the established European Capital of Culture concept, the programme has been allocated a budget of €2.5 million over the next three years. Cities have been invited to bid for funding.
Ryanair’s chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said: "We are pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with members of the European Parliament and with the European Commission on the European Capital of Tourism project, and we look forward to playing an important role in its development in the coming years."
