British travellers told to leave Crimea immediately
The Foreign Office has urged all UK citizens to leave the Crimea immediately as violence in the area escalates.
It follows the decision of the Russian parliament to authorise military action on Ukrainian soil against the wishes of the Ukrainian Government.
Armed men seized Simferopol airport early on 28 February but flights have now resumed as of March 2, reports the FCO.
However it advised against Brits using this route until the situation becomes more stable.
There were also violent demonstrations in eastern and southern Ukraine on March 1, the FCO said.
It said no flights are operating out of Sevastopol (Belbek) airport although train and bus routes out of the peninsula are still operating.
It also advised against all travel to the peninsula in the south of troubled Ukraine, with those remaining advised to "keep a low profile".
The FCO website says: "Anyone currently visiting, or living in, Crimea should leave now. The FCO is not able to provide consular services to anyone choosing to remain in Crimea."
