British woman jailed for taking 300 painkillers into Egypt loses appeal
Laura Plummer, who was sentenced to three years in prison for carrying 300 painkillers into Egypt last year has lost an appeal against the ruling.
The 34-year-old from Hull was arrested at Hurghada airport on October 9 2017 and was sentenced on Boxing Day.
She had claimed she was taking the tablets for her Egyptian partner, who suffers severe back pain.
The drugs are legal in the UK, but not in Egypt.
She appealed on the grounds that she did not know the drugs were banned.
But the appeal court ruled ignorance of the law was not a defence and said the original court decision should stand.
In a letter to the Sun newspaper, she said she was ‘devastated’ and accused the Foreign Office of not helping.
