BYO gas: Shortages in New York metro area prompt airlines to fly with fuel
The Associated Press reports that US Airways, Southwest Airlines and Republic Airlines are loading NY-area bound flights with fuel so that shortages in the area won’t prevent them from flying out again. AP says that American, Spirit and some other airlines are flying on faith without the extra fuel and not pursuing the BYOF policy.
The New York/New Jersey area is continuing to experience critical gas shortages that politicos say are getting better as more fuel arrives into the newly open Port of New York. Long lines of consumers at the gas pump, however, are the images on the evening news this week.
Gas lines in both New York and New Jersey have increasingly been the site of desperation, price-gouging and five-hour -long waits for gas. Earlier in the week, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie enacted a gas ration policy for odd and even license plates on alternative days in 12 Northern New Jersey counties.
