Call for UK to impose ‘Plan B’ Covid curbs now
The UK should immediately implement the ‘Plan B’ to tighten restrictions or a ‘winter crisis’ of surging Covid cases and deaths could be a reality, a senior health boss warned.
Chief executive of the NHS Confederation, Matthew Taylor has called for the return of masks and working from home as new sub-variant AY.4.2 takes hold across the country.
It could be ‘the most challenging winter on record’ Taylor says.
On Tuesday a further 223 people died, which is the highest since March 9.
"It is time for the government to enact Plan B of its strategy without delay because without pre-emptive action, we risk stumbling into a winter crisis."
"Also, health leaders need to understand what a ‘Plan C’ would entail if these measures are insufficient. It should not wait for Covid infections to rocket and for NHS pressures to be sky high before the panic alarm is sounded."
The seven-day average for cases is now 44,145 cases a day – the highest for many weeks.
Sajid Javid told MPs this week the NHS was facing a ‘particularly tough winter.’
Professor Neil Ferguson, a leading member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), also said he thought Plan B could be implemented in England throughout winter..
However the Prime Minister has said there is ‘absolutely no plan to introduce Plan B.’
This would only happen if there was a ‘significant risk of the NHS being overwhelmed,.’ Downing St said.
"We are not at that point. Because of the vaccination programme, the levels we are seeing in both patients admitted to hospital and deaths are far lower than we saw in previous peaks," a spokesperson said.
