Campaign to holiday at home
VisitEngland is launching a three-year project to encourage us to take more short breaks and holidays at home.
The initiative, called ‘Growing Tourism Locally’, will be funded by a successful bid to the Regional Growth Fund (RFG).
A key part of the project will be a national campaign aimed at inspiring Britons to take more short breaks and holidays at home and in doing so grow jobs in the tourism sector.
This comes as a Travelodge ‘UK Cities’ report found more UK children had visited Paris than Edinburgh or Cardiff.
Forty four per cent of British kids have visited London and 40% Paris while less than 20% have visited Edinburgh and Cardiff.
The hotel chain’s report, which surveyed 2,000 schoolkids, also revealed that more British children have visited an international city in comparison to UK cities.
VisitEngland chief executive James Berresford said: ”With this additional money we can mount a serious campaign to stimulate domestic tourism that has the potential to create the equivalent of 9,500 full time jobs in areas across the country suffering economic challenges."
