Can you cook a lamb chop? Australia needs you
National industry body Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) has welcomed the return of chefs to Australia’s skilled occupation list.
The move would help to fill urgent job vacancies and improve the visitor experience, said TTF chief executive Ken Morrison.
Morrison said the tourism and hospitality industries are in urgent need of more skilled labour, "especially chefs".
"Having chefs back on the skilled occupation list will plug a big skills gap and help provide even better service for our visitors," he said.
In 2011-12, 2160 chefs and cooks came to Australia on 457 visas but, Morrison added, "many tourism and hospitality businesses are still having trouble finding suitably qualified staff".
"Tourism is a highly competitive industry and Australia needs not only great infrastructure and events, but also adequate staffing levels and experience to cater for increasing customer demands," he said.
