Canada also has security concerns
The passport issue is coming full circle: Canada now says Americans may need passports to enter that country.
Government officials in Washington announced this week that Americans will need passports to re-enter the US from Canada. A date of 2008 was set for that requirement.
Canada’s Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan said that Americans may also be required to have passports.
Despite billions of dollars spent on security following 9-11, Canada’s borders are also vulnerable to terrorist attacks, added Canada Auditor General Sheila Fraser.
She said that country’s passport office is plagued by inadequate watch lists, outdated technology and poor record-keeping.
US government officials have also said they want to require passports by 2008 for Americans traveling to Mexico, Bermuda and some Caribbean countries.
