United States: Research shows skiers are at as much risk as beach lovers

Ski buffs could be at as much risk of cancer as those who spend their holidays lapping up the sun, a new report has revealed.

Research at the New York University School of Medicine has shown that some two thirds of skiers are exposed to twice as much radiation as it needs to burn skin, while even skiers who stay in the shade are at risk of sunburn.

And, according to the Daily Telegraph, doctors say that snow-reflected sunshine can dramatically increase the risk of the most dangerous type of skin cancer, Melanoma. The university’s tests showed that the sun is as intense in the ski resort of Vail as it is on Florida’s beaches but that most skiers did not realise the threat because of much lower temperatures.

The Ski Club of Great Britain told the newspaper that skiers should use high-factor lotions, applied liberally, adding that it is also important to re-apply lotion throughout the day.
