Miami-Dade police are investigating the death of a cruise passenger on a ship docked at Miami Port, after a man plunged to his death after climbing the ship’s mast.

The Carnival Ecstasy had just arrived back from a Caribbean itinerary when the incident took place.

The mast is part of a ‘restricted zone’ with signs warning passengers not to enter, said Jennifer de la Cruz, Carnival Cruise vice president of public relations.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time," she said.

It is thought the 20-year old man from North Carolina, who has not yet been named, fell onto the deck from a height of about 20 feet.

Carnival’s medical team responded before Miami Fire Rescue arrived.

He was later taken to hospital where he died.

Miami-Dade police said they do not suspect any foul play.

"Everything points to it being an accident," said Miami-Dade police detective Alvaro Zabaleta.
