Carnival, New Orleans extend agreement through 2019
New Orleans and Carnival Cruise Lines have extended an agreement that will mean the cruise line will deploy at least two ships year round through 2019.
The agreement replaces a 2013 three-year extension and also ties in three sequential one year extensions which could see Carnival homeport ships in the Big Easy until 2022.
The contract says Carnival will deploy at least two ships equivalent to the Dream Class and Fantasy Class ships which call at the Port of New Orleans.
New Orleans is currently home for the Carnival Dream and Carnival Elation at the port’s Erato Street Terminal, attracting over 400,000 cruisers to the city annually.
"This is a clear demonstration of Carnival’s belief in New Orleans as one of its top home ports," said Port of New Orleans CEO Gary LaGrange.
"We greatly value the professionalism of our partners at the port and the tremendous support we receive from the local community," said Carnival CEO Gerry Cahill in a statement.
Carnival’s contract extension is in contrast to Royal Caribbean’s decision last month to pull the Serenade of the Seas from New Orleans next April, citing "ongoing global expansion" in the Far East.
