Carnival ordered to pay $10 million in sexual assault lawsuit
A federal court awarded more than $10.2 million to a Carnival Cruise Line guest who alleged rape and false imprisonment against a crew member
A jury awarded the amount to plaintiff, referred to as Jane Doe, for an attack by crewmember, Fredy Anggara, aboard the Carnival Miracle in 2018.
Anggara was not a defendant in the lawsuit.
At the time of the sexual assault, the plaintiff was 21 years old and traveling with her friend and her friend’s family, according to the complaint.
The court heard Jane Doe was taken inside a closet where the sexual assault took place.
The court found that Jane Doe had proven her false imprisonment claim before the trial although Carnival Cruise Line argued it was consensual.
“The crewmember admitted that he had a consensual sexual encounter with the guest which is consistent with an investigation by the FBI,” Carnival said.
The incident occurred on the last night of the cruise according to court documents.
“I am so grateful my client was able to experience a well-run, orderly, and fair trial, despite Carnival’s best efforts to poison the jury with inappropriate comments,” the plaintiff’s attorney, Daniel Courtney said.
“We fully expect Carnival to appeal as they have never done the right thing when it comes to my brave client.”
