A young child has died on an Air Canada transatlantic flight destined for London after falling ill mid-flight.

Flight AC868 from Toronto to London was diverted to Shannon, Ireland, after a 10-year old girl suffered an unspecified medical problem.

Air Canada said flight crew were assisted by a doctor and nurse onboard but the girl was pronounced dead a short time after the jet landed in Ireland.

The Irish Mirror reported the girl was on the flight with three members of her family and apparently went into cardiac arrest.

She was rushed to University Hospital Limerick where she was pronounced dead.

"We are deeply saddened by this situation and we are doing all we can to assist the family in these tragic circumstances," said airline spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick.

Authorities said a post mortem examination would be carried out to determine cause of death.

The plane was carrying 230 passengers and later continued on to London Heathrow.
