China promotes accessible tourist trains for seniors
China is pushing to develop the silver tourism sector through tourist train routes.
It is making moves to expand senior-friendly services at all levels, including tourism services aimed at elderly travelers.
The Ministry of Commerce and China Railway Group have teamed up with a joint action plan to introduce dozens of rail routes aimed at senior tourists.
It is proposing a comprehensive network of tourist trains starting from 2027 on routes to make scenic spots more accessible, as well as upgrading trains to improve comfort and facilities for senior travelers.
The government says the number of tourist train trips has surged in recent years and demand for rail holidays is huge.
“By 2027, over 100 high-quality routes for senior tourists are expected to be designed, with more than 2,500 elderly-friendly tourist trains in operation,” said Zhu Wenzhong, Deputy Director, Passenger Transportation Department, China Railway Group.
