Citilink Indonesia launching Penang flights

Budget airline Citilink Indonesia plans to spread its wings with new routes to Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.

The low cost offshoot of Garuda Indonesia will kick off the new services with daily flights to the Malaysian island of Penang on March 25 from Jakarta.

Double daily Jakarta-Singapore flights will launch in April and service to Bangkok is slated to commence later this year.

Originally set up in 2001 as a regional feeder airline, Citilink had suffered several years of operational losses and now it is marking 2018 as the year to kick start expansion across the ASEAN region.

"The Jakarta-Penang flight will further strengthen the benefits of the ASEAN Economic Community so that population mobility will be more dynamic and ultimately open up business opportunities and alliances with Malaysia," remarked Citilink Indonesia president director Juliandra Nurtjahjo.

Penang becomes only the second international scheduled route for Citilink after launching flughts to Dili, East Timor last year.

It also flies charter services to China and Jeddah.

The airline operates more than 250 daily flights on 66 routes using a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.
