Coming to a view near you: Google’s Street Trike

Sunday, 16 Feb, 2010 0

SYDNEY – Google is inviting Australians to cast the final vote to select which off-the-beaten-track locations will be photographed by Australia’s first Google Street View Trike, for the world to see via Google Maps.

The 110kg Google Street View Trike consists of a modified bicycle mounted with a Street View camera and GPS system

The Street View Trike is now ready to go off-road to capture Australia’s most beautiful ‘pedestrian-only’ locations.

More than 3,000 destinations were nominated to be visited by the Trike, in the categories of City Life, Cultural Areas, Natural Wonders and Hidden Gems.

Some of the more original ideas included taking the trike up Sydney’s Centrepoint Tower; capturing the Murray River from the deck of a houseboat, and riding a campus tour of Monash University in Melbourne.

A full list of the national short-listed locations can be viewed and voted for at google.com.au/trike from today.

Voting closes on Sunday February 21, and Google will announce the winning locations including the trike’s finalised travel itinerary on February 25.

The Google Street View imagery collected by the Trike will begin to be published on Google Maps later this year.
