Concern over Heathrow collisions
A series of crashes between aircraft and buildings at London’s Heathrow airport have raised serious concerns about overcrowding.
According to The Guardian, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) will today publish a report that expresses concern that the spate of collisions is being caused by a lack of space at the airport.
The newspaper states that the AAIB reported four years ago that there were between 70 and 120 such incidents at Heathrow each year, and that today’s report will say that little has been done to remedy the problem.
Investigators will reportedly conclude that there is “little overall strategy” for moving aircraft to and from stands at Heathrow.
One section of the report says: “London Heathrow airport operated within a site of restricted size. It is apparent that the airport is working to capacity and that the operation is constantly being driven to increase this capacity still further.”
It also reportedly points out that some stands designed for one large aircraft are being used for two smaller planes.
