Cool film-lovers head for Norway
Anyone heading for the wilds of northern Norway – and it is appreciated that it is not one of the world’s foremost tourist destinations – can check out the latest movies in a cinema made completely of snow. According to a report in The Guardian newspaper, the new cinema in Kautokeino, about 100 miles east of Tromso, has reindeer skins to sit on, while the screen itself is also made of the white stuff. Anna Lajla Utsi, who has organised the 10-day Kautokeino Sami film festival, is quoted as saying: “We always wanted to create a different film experience. There are almost as many snowmobiles here as people – that is why we wanted to give audiences the chance to drive down straight from the mountains into a film experience.” According to The Guardian, audiences “rave about the experience of watching a movie under the Arctic sky as the Northern Lights weave their magic over the bleak Finnmark tundra”.
