Council concerned over Stansted Airport expansion
Hertfordshire County Council has voiced its concerns about the planned expansion of London Stansted Airport.
The council questioned whether the economic benefits would outweigh the impact of ‘increased traffic, pollution and noise.’
The airport submitted plans to boost capacity to 51 million.
The airport is located across the county border in Essex but would also impact – both positive and negative – Hertfordshire residents too.
“We are clear that any growth or expansion must be sustainable and of benefit to the local area, including to those just over the border here in Hertfordshire,” said Paul Zukowskyj, Liberal Democrat executive member for environment, transport and growth.
Hertfordshire is concerned about air quality and noise levels, and the airport’s push to encourage larger aircraft would impact quality of life.
“Expansion at Stansted would, of course, bring economic benefits but I question how much of those benefits will be seen by those whose lives will be blighted by increased traffic, pollution and most importantly, noise,” Zukowskyj added.
The airport has already commenced work on a separate £1.1 billion expansion project which was approved last year.
Zukowskyj said: “The local planning authority simply pushing on at this stage without specialist technical advice would be a mistake.
“As a council we want to see the entire country prosper, but not to the detriment of local people and businesses.”
