Voyages to Antiquity is understood to have cancelled all its cruises until September, affecting around 3,500 passengers.

The cruise line said it has a technical issue with the starboard engine on its one ship, the Aegean Odyssey.

The first cruise to be cancelled was a 12-day cruise of the Black Sea, which should have departed on May 2. A report on the BBC claims passengers were only told their cruise had been cancelled two days earlier.

The 47-year-old ship carries 350 passengers. The cruise line has cancelled 10 departures, up to and including August 26.

Voyages to Antiquity said passengerse are being contacted and refunded and that it is ‘ working closely with our trade partners and doing everything possible to minimise disruption’.

In a statement on its website, the cruise line adds: "Voyages to Antiquity would like to apologise for the inconvenience these cancellations will cause to our guests.

"The mechanical issue experienced was unavoidable and unforeseeable.

"We have been assured that, following its period in dry dock, Aegean Odyssey will be back in service in time to fulfil the remainder of its scheduled cruise timetable, starting with the Rome-Venice and associated future Grand Voyage itineraries departing from 7 September 2019."
