An American cruise passenger died after falling into the water from a tender platform during a planned shore visit in the South Pacific.

The 70-year old woman fell last week from the Holland America Line ship Maasdam during a tendering operation off Rarotonga in the Cook Islands.

Holland America said the woman was quickly was pulled out of the water then lost consciousness and could not be saved by the ship’s medical staff.

Cruise Law News quoted one passenger who questioned whether it should have been tendering at all due to rough seas.

"Company care team counsellors assisted her family and other guests at this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," the line said in a statement.

The Maasdam was on a two-week French Polynesia cruise out of Tahiti.

Local authorities in Rarotonga are investigating the incident.
