Cruise ships to help evacuate thousands as volcano threatens St Vincent
Empty cruise ships are being put to use to help evacuate thousands of residents on St Vincent as the Caribbean Island faces a major volcanic eruption. La Soufrière volcano is now in an ‘explosive phase’ and could blow at any time, experts said.
Two Royal Caribbean and two Carnival Cruise Line ships are expected to arrive to ferry residents off the island but mass evacuations during a pandemic has presented a dilemma for neighboring countries.
There has been some reluctance to accept evacuees due to fears of Covid spreading although the islands of St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados and Antigua said they would accept them.
