Deadly explosion rips through Mexico City fireworks market

Sunday, 21 Dec, 2016 0
At least 29 people have been killed and dozens more injured after an explosion at a packed Mexico City fireworks market.

Most fireworks stalls were completely destroyed at the open-air San Pablito Market in Tultepec, near Mexico City.

Fireworks were still going off even after emergency services arrived on the scene.

Civil protection national coordinator Luís Felipe Puente said many nearby homes were also damaged and a three-mile cordon was put up as large plumes of smoke filled the air.

Puente said that after evacuating all people, the situation was too dangerous to immediately extinguish the fires and remaining fireworks were left to burn out.

It is Mexico’s best-known fireworks market and was packed with shoppers buying fireworks for the holidays.

The same market suffered a big fire in 2005, damaging hundreds of stalls.
