Deadly India heatwave set to continue
Weather forecasters have warned that a heatwave that has already claimed 1100 lives in India is set to continue.
Temperatures in parts of the south of the country soared to 48C over the weekend.
Nearly 900 people have died in Andhra Pradesh this month and there have been a further 200 deaths this week in neighbouring Telangana.
Authorities say many of the victims are construction workers, the elderly and homeless people unable to follow the official advice to stay indoors.
Roads near the capital of New Delhi have melted in the heat and in Gurgaon, a city on the outskirts, demand from millions of air conditioning units has triggered 10-hour power cuts.
India’s meteorological department has said showers are expected from June 2, but temperatures will remain high.
The Foreign Office has not issued any specific, weather-related advice for UK travellers to India during the heatwave.
