Delta restarting Iceland flights in summer
Delta Air Lines will resume its seasonal service to Iceland this summer.
From May 2, the carrier will fly daily from New York JFK to Keflavik International Airport until September 28.
"Figures from the Icelandic Tourism Board show that there was an almost 30% rise in the number of US visitors to Iceland in 2014 compared to the previous year," Perry Cantarutti, Delta’s SVP for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said in a statement.
"Delta is proud to help facilitate this growth while also allowing increased choice for Icelanders travelling to the US."
Delta will be up against some stiff competition.
Icelandair operates on that route along with departures from Anchorage, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis St. Paul, Newark Liberty, Orlando Sanford, Seattle and Washington Dulles
A new entrant on the transatlantic scene is Icelandic budget carrier WOW.
It also launches flights from Boston and Baltimore/Washington to Iceland starting in early May.
It received a lot of media attention for its advertised lead-in fares at only $228 round-trip.
WOW CEO Skúli Mogensen said there has been intense demand for flights.
"Although we were always optimistic about the success of new service at BWI, our bookings to and from the Washington/Baltimore region have far exceeded what we anticipated," he said.
